As “Twisters” continues to take the theatrical box office by storm grossing over $155 million domestically in its second week of release, audiences around the country are seeing how Oklahoma’s motion picture industry, including the state’s local workforce, businesses and communities, helps set the scene for productions filming on-location in the Sooner State. With growing interest in how the film was successfully produced in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Film + Music Office (OF+MO) has published a “Twisters” Filming Map, which details a selection of locations that were used for the film as well as provides additional information, including the impact of the production to local businesses and more.
“They say it’s rare for lightning to strike in the same place twice, but ‘Twisters’ seems to be an exception to the rule,” said OF+MO Director Jeanette Stanton. “We’re incredibly proud that we not only set the stage for the original 1996 film, but decades later, welcomed Universal Pictures to Oklahoma for ‘Twisters.’ We share in the excitement of our hard working local cast and crew, communities, businesses, state, city and tribal leaders and all who played a critical role in mounting the successful production of this monumental film in our state.” She continues, “We hope this map will be a valuable resource to those interested in learning more about the film’s production in Oklahoma and help drive further opportunities for impact and tourism to many of those who helped with the production and to whom we’re grateful for their participation.”
Directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and starring Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Glen Powell (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and Anthony Ramos (“In the Heights”), “Twisters” is a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster “Twister.” Produced by Universal Pictures, principal photography on “Twisters” first began in Oklahoma City on May 8, 2023. Throughout 60 days of principal photography, “Twisters” engaged with multiple communities statewide, including El Reno, Chickasha, Midwest City, Spencer, Kingfisher, Calumet, Hinton, Fairview, Okarche, Kremlin, Burbank and Pawhuska.
