Originally from Oklahoma, Choctaw Nation tribal citizen and filmmaker Kyle Kauwika Harris grew up as a kid emotionally captivated by films such as “Cool Hand Luke”, “Badlands” and “Last of the Mohicans”. After his service in the military, Harris completed a two-year film program in Phoenix and got his start in the industry six years ago after writing, directing and producing his first short film, “The Reunion”.
Since 2014, Harris has written 23 feature screenplays as well as produced and directed a dozen short and documentary projects, including the 2018 Oklahoma City 48 Hour Film Race winning short “Los Americanos” and the Emmy-winning feature “I Stand: The Guardians of the Water”, a documentary on the story of Standing Rock Sioux Nation and the continued opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline.
“I have met and worked with so many super talented actors, cameramen, editors, composers, etc. here in the state of Oklahoma,” said Harris. “If you can get it done here, then why not? My hope for the future is for more local filmmakers to have more financial resources and outlets to get their films made. More panels and meetings that celebrate local artists.”
Filming throughout central Oklahoma utilizing the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program, Harris just wrapped principal photography in October on his first narrative feature length film, “Out of Exile”, which he wrote, directed and produced. Currently, he is developing a number of projects, some of which are slated to be produced in 2021-2022, including the drama “The Warm Season”, TV pilot “Southern Cunning”, “Bloodroot”, and the Jim Thorpe biopic “Bright Path”.
