Music Artist for February 2016: Horton Records

Brian Horton has always been a fan of live music having been heavily involved with his brother’s band through his high school and college years, acting as a sound engineer, promoter and manager, and played a similar role with both of his son’s bands. His more active involvement in the Tulsa music scene began around 2007 when a number of younger artists started to collaborate and emerge as the next generation of a rich musical heritage. Being first and foremost a fan, the act of helping the musicians grew into the non-profit, volunteer-based music organization known as Horton Records, which provides support for recording, distribution, promotion, booking, management and administration.

Horton Records’ scope and reach has continued to grow steadily with an objective of connecting musicians to resources and building the community. One off-shoot of that effort is The Oklahoma Room at Folk Alliance International. “The Oklahoma Room came about through discussions with Scott Aycock and Folk Salad Radio. In the spirit of community, we wanted to join forces across the state and take a collective group of musicians to showcase at the event and highlight the wonderful talent that we have in Oklahoma,” Horton says of the event.
