Featured Music Career for July 2024: Songwriter

Casii Stephan is an indie soul-pop artist based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who writes lyrics deconstructing ideas of ageism, sexism, racism and more within her own life. She has had the honor of sharing these lyrics on stages such as Folk Alliance International, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Independent Music Awards and more!

How did you get started?

I was surrounded by music. My mom plays piano. My aunt sings and lead worship at the church I grew up in. My grandfather wrote, sang and played trumpet. As soon as it was discovered that I could hold a melody, I was asked to sing in church. My mom started me on piano lessons at six, and I took flute for a few years in my teens. My influences were CCM, Disney and musicals, as that’s what I was allowed to listen to. It wasn’t until my early teens that I got into rock with White Stripes and Foo Fighters. And I still love discovering “new” things. I feel like we’re always growing and moving with new influences.

Did you always want a career in the music industry?

I think I always wanted it. I just never thought I could be audacious enough to say it. I love music, but didn’t know if it was possible for me to have it.

What are your most recent successes / placements / accomplishments / projects and or career highlights?

Recently, I was able to sign with TRO Essex Music Group in publishing. Which means my songs are now included in the same catalog as Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and more! So that’s been really great! I’m also in the middle of releasing my Relationship Status EP. It will be released fully in August via Shamus Records/TRO Essex Music Group.

What is your favorite Oklahoma music venue, music store, or recording studio?

I have three favorite Oklahoma venues right now, all in Tulsa: Thelma’s Peach, The Colony and Mercury Lounge.

Networking and connecting with others who share your dream or vision is a vital aspect to the music industry. Can you share which Oklahoma organizations (if any) have contributed to your success and are there Oklahoma organization you would recommend other connect with? To help further their craft or promotion?

The Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Art & Culture (Tulsa FMAC) was super great for me, especially when I was starting out in Oklahoma. I also really appreciate the people in the Tulsa music scene. I’ve been blessed to be a part of this scene, and it does uplift others within it.

How can we follow you? Best place to purchase and listen to your music (if applicable)?

Ah! I will have CD’s for sale of my EP. Probably best to find me on Bandcamp or my site, if you want one when they come out. Otherwise, stream my music on Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora! Or follow me on IG, TikTok and Facebook, all handles: @casiistephan

Can you share some advice for someone interested in working in the music industry?

Put yourself out there. Be friendly. Be kind.

What are some of the benefits of having a music career in Oklahoma?

Low cost of living for sure. I’m visiting in Nashville right now, and I’ve been warned about the expense. Lol. I also think we have some incredible musicians and songwriters. And we’re nice, too.

Favorite quote (if applicable) and why?

“It will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” This reminds me to keep my head up high and keep moving forward.
