The deadCENTER Film Festival is celebrating its 15th anniversary as Oklahoma’s largest film festival and one of the “20 Coolest Film Festival in the World.” Started in 2001 with a mission to promote, encourage and celebrate the independent film arts, deadCENTER now attracts 25,000 to its annual festival and reaches 3,000 high school students each fall with its statewide education program. Kim Haywood, Director of Programming and Education, has been running the festival for 13 years as the first employee. Executive Director Lance McDaniel had six films in the festival before coming on staff and launching the statewide education program that recently won the 2014 Governor’s Arts Award. Operations Manager Alyx Picard volunteered for 6 years before taking on operations and bringing the festival into this century with new technology. The three-person staff works with more than 400 volunteers to bring this one-of-kind celebration of film to life. This year’s festival is June 10-14.
