MUSEUM FILMS IN MARCH 2019
March 1 | 8:00 am - March 31 | 5:00 pm UTC-5
One event on March 25 2019 at 8:00am
With the Oscars a thing of the past once again, Museum Films begins the month of March with the greatest of all palate cleansers: the films of New Wave demigod Jean-Luc Godard. Headlined by the living legend’s latest, The Image Book, “JLG Forever” brings this modern masterpiece and three other classics to Oklahoma City screens—Contempt, starring Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli; Pierrot le Fou, featuring Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo; and the film that started it all, the great Breathless, on 35mm film!
If Godard doesn’t satisfy your European art-film craving, March also features three nights of Wim Wenders’ 1987 classic, Wings of Desire, starring the recently departed Bruno Ganz, in a sparkling, brand new 4K digital restoration. March also brings the latest from another, younger German master, Christian Petzold. His atmospheric refugee drama Transit premiered, along with Wenders’ restoration, to great acclaim at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival. Transit will stand the test of time no less than Wings of Desire.
The same could be said for 2018 Cannes festival highlight The Wild Pear Tree, directed by Turkey’s leading filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Winter Sleep). Set in the vicinity of the ancient city of Troy, the rich and textured The Wild Pear Tree is the cinematic equivalent of Russian literature. Moving further to the east in the Islamic world, director Michael Winterbottom (The Trip) returns with a scintillating new English-language thriller, The Wedding Guest, set in Pakistan and India with Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel transfixing in the lead role.
Finally, Museum Films is proud to present two excellent new, teen-focused documentaries to round out this month’s schedule: Wrestle and The Competition. Wrestle follows four young Alabama high-school wrestlers and their coach as they face extraordinarily long odds as student athletes in one of the poorest urban school districts in that state. Meanwhile, back across the Atlantic in Paris, The Competition observes the cutthroat admissions process in France’s most prestigious film school. Like Wrestle, The Competition concludes with failure for some and joy for others in defying the long odds that their quests for college present.
