Earlier this year the world said goodbye to the director who had come to be known as the “godmother of the French New Wave.” As a tribute to her pioneering work, we offer one of her earliest full-length films. The story opens with Cléo, a pop singer whose star is just on the rise, leaving her doctor’s office convinced that she is seriously ill. The audience spends the next two hours with her as she tries to distract herself while waiting for the phone call with test results. Filmed in cabs, parks, cafés, and streets of Paris, the story presents both a thoughtful character study of poise-in-crisis and a treasure-filled audio/visual time capsule of early 1960s culture. In French with English subtitles. Running time 90 min.

Varda transforms the typical French cinema gamine into a complex, tragic figure: the girl who’s all too good at playing plaything, forced to face the hollowness of her youth.” – Ed Halter, Village Voice
