Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Sequoyah’s Cabin in Sallisaw is an Oklahoma landmark that has been preserved to give visitors an authentic look at the life of the famous Cherokee man from centuries ago. Sequoyah, a significant figure in American history, was a well-known silversmith who was monumental in the creation of the Cherokee language. Visitors to the log cabin will experience firsthand Sequoyah’s efforts to increase literacy within the Cherokee Nation, which actively supports film production within its territories through the efforts of the Cherokee Nation Film Office.
Built in 1829, the cabin was enclosed in a protective native stone cover building in 1936 for future generations to experience its unique history. Settled on a serene 10-acre park, the property also features a museum that explains Cherokee history and features exhibits and artifacts of early life during this period in history.
