Jeremy Charles is a writer/director/producer/cinematographer and leader of Tulsa-based FireThief Productions. Beginning as an art director and freelance writer, he spent a decade as a photographer recognized for his bold portraiture and work in the music scene. In 2014, Charles answered the call of filmmaking and founded FireThief, a Native-owned film production company, with then-partner Sterlin Harjo.
Charles has filled nearly every role in production in hundreds of short docs, narrative shorts, branded content and music videos, garnering five regional Emmys for the series “Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People”, and winning Best Director in 2017 for the documentary short “Singing Tradition”. His direction of the music video for ‘Everybody Needs’ by Branjae earned Judge’s Choice Graphex award in 2018, and his films have been selected for numerous film festivals.
His narrative short “Totsu (Redbird)” will premiere in 2020, as will “Inage’i (In The Woods)”, an original animated series in Cherokee Language. Jeremy is currently developing a supernatural crime series “Whitekiller”, a narrative feature “Silver Alert”, and a science focused docu-series.
“It’s an exciting time to be a creative in Oklahoma,” said Charles. “The film community is only beginning to bloom, and there are more opportunities than ever to share our authentic stories with the world. I’ve been around long enough to see how far we’ve come. It’s something to smile about.”
Charles currently has several films with which he is affiliated screening at this month’s virtual deadCenter Film Festival, including Sterlin Harjo’s documentary feature “Love and Fury” (co-producer, cinematographer) and Charles Elmore’s short film “The Chest” (producer).
